About this Event
At RightsTech Women (RTW), we believe in the power of education to drive social impact, especially when it comes to empowering young girls and women to shape the future of technology and environmental action. We are thrilled to announce an upcoming training designed to introduce girls and women aged 14 and older to the fascinating world of satellite data and its role in understanding climate change.
This training will be split into two key parts: inspiring young women to pursue STEM careers and providing hands-on technical training to explore the power of satellite imagery to track climate change.
Part 1: Getting More Women in STEM Careers
We kick off the morning with an engaging discussion on the need to get more women into data science and working on global issues like climate change. Ellen Walker, founder of RTW, will share her insights on the importance of female representation in STEM fields, specifically in the growing fields of data science and environmental research.
Additionally, a CERN Women in Technology representative will provide a personal perspective on working with cutting-edge computing and data science at CERN, one of the world’s most influential scientific research institutions. This inspiring session will encourage young women to consider STEM careers that can have a direct impact on the world.
Part 2: Technical Training – Using Satellite Data for Climate Change
In the second half of the session, participants will get hands-on training from CERN Micro Club and CERN Women in Technology on how to leverage satellite imagery to understand and track climate change. Through the use of Google Earth Engine, participants will learn how to use satellite data to visualize and analyze climate trends, including issues such as deforestation, temperature change, and extreme weather events.
They will gain practical experience on how to apply this data to their own local areas and communities, providing them with the skills to investigate and understand climate trends in a meaningful way. This session will empower participants with both the technical knowledge and the inspiration to become active contributors to addressing the challenges of climate change.
