About this Event
Bring along objects you’re interested in casting and Shaye will teach you how to make basic one-part and two-part moulds using alginate and plaster. From this mould, you’ll be able to cast the object in wax, creating a candle reproduction of the object.
Shaye is drawn to the alchemical process of casting and the inherent slippages that come from making copies of an object. In her practice, she explores ideas of mistranslation and replication. Casting allows Shaye to render objects in unexpected materials to subvert their conventional function and meaning.
Afternoon tea will be provided.
About the artist
Shaye Dương is an artist living and working on Kaurna Country (Adelaide). Working across sculptural processes of casting and assemblage, her practice examines human engagement with objects and sites associated with intimacy, security and ritual. Often leaning on her own diasporic experience with translational slippages and spatial uncertainty, Dương aims to create new forms that hold traces of both the arcane and familiar. Recent exhibitions include presentations at Adelaide Central School of Art; Firstdraft, Sydney, Holy Rollers Studios, Adelaide; Nexus Arts, Adelaide; and Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts.
