About this Event

Provided at NO COST to the public, and taught by US Coast Guard Certified instructors from the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 03-07.

This short seminar is intended to provide guidance for those boat occupants such as guests, friends, spouses, etc., who may find themselves “Suddenly in Command” if the boat captain is no longer able to operate the boat for whatever reason!

You are now in charge! Will you be able to take over and insure the safety of everyone aboard without the captain? Are you prepared to take basic actions to get help, stop or start the engine and take the helm?

Misfortunes can and do happen while on that fishing, diving, adventure, or party charter. Being out on your own boat with that significant other at the helm, or going out on a friends’ pontoon boat can also turn to horror if the skipper is suddenly out of commission. This is a boating safety primer for those not generally at the helm but would like to know what to do, to be better prepared.

This is NOT A FULL BOATING COURSE but is a concise summary of emergency procedures if you are “Suddenly in Command”.

Topics include:

  • How to use the VHF or cell phone to call for help,
  • How to determine your location in any body of water and give that information to rescuers,
  • Developing situational awareness,
  • Understanding how boats handle,
  • Flare usage,
  • Life jackets,
  • Anchoring basics,
  • Emergency gear,
  • Discussion of pertinent cell phone apps.

You will learn about your vessel, nomenclature, and operating principles such as starting the engine, basic boat handling, and your on board equipment. Included descriptions of what causes boating mishaps and how to minimize them. This course is a must for family members in case something happens to the boat operator. A little knowledge could save lives and make you feel more comfortable boating when you’re not generally at the helm.

Following the formal presentation will be a “show and tell” of recommended safety equipment as well as a question and answer period.
