Since 1987, efforts to document Baliās traditional healers (Balian) have faced a core challenge: authentic Balian do not advertise or seek recognitionātheir knowledge is believed to be spiritually received, not taught. Attempts to bring them into formal settings, from university seminars to hospital programs, have largely failed due to the deeply personal and sacred nature of their practice, which is tied to family shrines and ancestral spirits.
