The next USA by the Bay Speaker Series event in Fairhope will be held Thursday, April 10 at 5:30 p.m. The talk will feature Dr. Steven Scyphers, chief sustainability officer at the University of South Alabama. "Sustainability at South" is a transformative initiative led by Scyphers, focused on advancing and connecting sustainability across cutting-edge research, experiential education, campus operations and community engagement. This event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and registration is required at SouthAlabama.edu/SpeakerSeries. Current priorities at South include conducting a campus-wide sustainability assessment, promoting the main campus as an outdoor classroom, and supporting student research and career development opportunities in sustainability. USA by the Bay will highlight South's rapidly expanding sustainability programs, including opportunities for the community to engage and partner.
Scyphers also serves as an associate professor in the USA Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences and Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work. He is also a senior marine scientist at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Prior to his current roles, Scyphers was a tenured associate professor at Northeastern University in the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences and a core faculty member in the Social Science Environmental Health Research Institute.
Scyphers' research integrates ecology and sociology to understand and overcome major challenges facing coastal communities, including sustainable fisheries, coastal development and ecosystem restoration. Scyphers earned a B.S. in Marine Biology from Auburn University and Ph.D. in Marine Sciences from the University of South Alabama. He completed a National Science Foundation Science, Engineering, and Education for Sustainability Fellowship at Northeastern University.
