Join Ursula Martin to hear about her second book - One Woman Walks Europe.
'As long as I walk every step, everything else I do to stay alive and keep on walking is good enough.'
In this epic test of stamina and will, 5500 miles over 2 years, Ursula starts in Kyiv and crosses Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, France, Spain and the UK.
She brings to life the challenging landscapes and people she meets, and tests her limitations, confronting her traumatic childhood, unsuitable relationships and life-changing illness, realising how much she needs community, while pushing it away. When Covid forces her to lockdown in France, we share her loneliness and determination, as she waits it out and begins again, crossing the Camino de Santiago, and coming home to
Wales.
A life-changing walk for Ursula and for every reader who takes this journey with her.
Ursula captures the amazing people she meets and when understanding of different Europeans is needed more than ever, readers will be fascinated to learn about so many ways of life. You’ll feel you are there.
• It’s a glorious piece of nature writing, of forests, mountains, wolves, bears and birds, cities and the open road.
• The walk forces Ursula, painfully, to come to respect her courage and own body’s stamina, in a way a lot of people, particularly women, will find empowering.
Ursula has focused her youth on travelling, in between periods of low paid work. She was born in Swansea, grew up in Derbyshire and lives in Newtown.
She has a small overgrown garden where she plants seeds and forgets to harvest them. Her first book, One Woman Walks Wales, was published by Honno in 2018.
