The Trail & District Arts Council presents “DJ Ahmet” at Monday Cinema on Monday, January 12 at 4 pm at The Royal Theatre in Trail.
Winner of the Special Jury Prize and an Audience Award at Sundance 2025, “DJ Ahmet” is a heartwarming, funny, and deeply human, coming-of-age tale about self-expression, cultural tension and youthful rebellion.
Ahmet, a 15-year-old boy from a remote Yuruk village in North Macedonia, finds freedom in music while navigating his father’s strict expectations, a conservative community, and his first experience with love — a girl already promised to someone else.
In a world that leaves little room for dreams, Ahmet must carve out a space for himself.

“Unkovski’s coming-of-age comedy finds much to smile about in a North Macedonian village where conservative traditions clash with modern times.” - Peter Howell, Toronto Star
“Delightful and beguilingly sharp, “DJ Ahmet” is a reminder that if there are no new stories, there are new ways of telling them.” - Ty Burr, Ty Burr's Watch List (Substack)
“The film playfully critiques certain Muslim customs, but never in a demeaning way, while providing a heartwarming coming-of-age narrative that’s a tad predictable.” - Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter
