A taster of the night...
To summarise Urban Wordsmiths it’s an evening of Spoken Word, Open mic, Live Music, and round good vibes. But what does that look like in practise? No night is ever the same, but there are familiar key touch points at every event.
- Theme - A typical evening has an overarching theme to inspire content, and help build a narrative to the event. We’ve explored Remembrance, Weep and Rejoice, Heroes, and Home
- Open Mic - We have 5 open mic spots where anyone can share their stuff, if you’re an up-and-comer, or a first-timer - we love to celebrate Poetry and People!
- Feature Poets - We typically have 3-4 feature Poets at each event. We love to give a platform for local Poets and emerging poets. Many of our feature Poets are published and seasoned performers.
- Headliner - we love to showcase some of the best poets in the country. So far, we’ve had Harry Baker, Stephen James Smith, Storm Cecile, Duke Al and Connor Allen.
- Music Act - at every event, we have a resident music act who helps bring the vibes. We love spoken word poetry, but we also love live music and when the two genres mix, we think something special happens.
- Reflection - Usually there’s a spoken word and music collab to reflect on the theme of the evening where Dai or Cath share, which often has a nod to faith or their personal story.
