About this Event
Staple crops (corn, cereal grains and dry beans) play an integral role in our diets, agricultural communities and cultural identities.
Join two Michael Fields Agricultural Institute programs: MKE Urban Ag Network (MUAN) and Midwest GRIT; and UW-Madison Extension Milwaukee County Urban Agriculture Program, for a workshop that will cover grain production, what grains could look like in an urban setting & how you can support a regional grain economy. Learn how small grains and maize fit into soil health practices for community gardens or farms.
This hands on workshop will be the first of a three-part series. You will gain an introduction to the world of grains, including variety selection, best field practices, & planting experience!
This event is for urban farmers, beginning farmers, and grain curious community members. Come prepared to get your hands dirty!
Spanish & Hmong interpretation is available upon request.
Following events in this series will include a cereal grain harvest and milling demonstration (July) and a maize harvest and community celebration (October). Registration for these will be available approximately one month before the event.
