A Mindfulness Walk focused on learning about & appreciating Flowering Plants
About this Event

Please join me for an Urban Nature Walk through the Marigny Neighborhood on Saturday, August 16th at 9am, which will focus on flowers in Urban spaces. We will meet at Washington Square by the playground, 700 Elysian Fields Ave. Anticipate a leisurely Naturalist walk around the neighborhood to last approximately 1 and a half hours. At the end of the walk, I will provide native flower seeds for everyone to take home with them.

On this walk, we will identify and talk about flowers that are known to be native to Louisiana and also flowers that have been introduced to the area. We will discuss the benefits of flowers, why they are so important to our Urban environment and what each and everyone of us can do to cultivate them. As climate change continues to escalate, it has become even more important for us to maintain healthy ecosystems in our home environment. Flowers provide pollinating insects and other animals with nectar and pollen, which is crucial for our survival as a planet. Most of our food source comes from pollinating plants or from something that consumes pollinating plants.

We will likely find flowers that grow on trees, shrubs and other plants such as Sunflowers, Roses, Magnolias, Blanket Flower, Spider Lilies, Turk’s Cap, Beggersticks, Milkweed, Dayflowers, and Coreopsis. We will discuss how some flowers turn into fruits and berries as well as how flowers spread their seeds for further propagation. This is an opportunity to learn about and appreciate all things flower related.

I am a great appreciator of nature and consider myself an Urban Naturalist. I am a certified Master Naturalist for the Greater New Orleans area and I am currently serving on the board for the Native Plant Initiative of Greater New Orleans. It is my life’s work to get others excited about nature in an urban setting.

Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water.

This is a totally free walk but tips are appreciated.
