Urban Layers: Geology in the City

What if the city streets you walk every day were telling a story millions of years in the making?
Step into downtown Lincoln for a one-of-a-kind, in-person geology tour with Conservation Nebraska and Nebraska Master Naturalist. This tour is led by Jon Garbisch, Associate Director at Cedar Point Biological Station, who brings the Earth's deep history to life in the heart of an urban landscape. On this guided walk, you'll discover how natural geological features and human-made structures are deeply interconnected—and how the materials that shape our built environment are, quite literally, carved from the planet’s past.
Together, we’ll examine the hidden stories embedded in building stones, pavements, and public art, tracing their origins back to quarries, riverbeds, and fossil-rich formations. We’ll trace the geological origins of downtown buildings and public spaces, learning how the Earth’s processes of formation, erosion, and extraction leave their marks in the places we often overlook.
More than just a tour, this experience invites you to reflect on the deep connections between natural geological processes and human-made environments. Learn how centuries of extraction and innovation have intertwined to create the streets, buildings, and public spaces we inhabit today.
Whether you're a rock enthusiast, a city explorer, or someone curious about how geology plays out in daily life, this tour invites you to see Lincoln in a whole new way—from the ground up.
This tour does contain walking, so wear a comfortable set of shoes and bring a reusable water bottle!
