What is Urban Kiz? It's frame-based partner social dance style birthed in Paris, France that fuses elements from Kizomba, Tango, and Hip-hop. The creators of the dance are still alive, young, and the dance is actively evolving. It is one of the most popular social dances in Europe and has spread across the globe in the past 10-12 years.
Why train with us? Charlie Devine is one of the most tenured Urban Kiz instructors in the USA with 8 years experience, he was the first instructor to bring the dance to the DMV. Jennifer brings 4 decades of experience as a dancer and performer across many styles who has been training in Urban Kiz for 4 years. We are the only instructors currently teaching Urban Kiz in the RVA area and are excited for you to discover the magic of this dance.
Why try Urban Kiz? It can be danced to many styles of music including pop, r&b, hip hop, EDM...at a wide variety of speeds. As a frame-connection based dance you will learn how to connect and communicate with your dance partner with lightness and finesse - skills that translate to and improve you as a dancer in all other dance styles as a light and responsive follow, and/or as a gentle and clear lead. It feels good and is gentle on your body! Urban Kiz is a highly technical dance structured as a language with rules for communicating and moving in partnership -- once you become "fluent" the possibilities for creativity and musical expression are virtually endless.
What shoes to wear? You can train in socks, soft-soled dance shoes, or clean sneakers that were not worn in from the street. Ladies very often dance Urban Kiz in sneakers but heels work too.
Note: The Ox is a private home in RVA, all students must be connected to the host Jennifer via Facebook, IG, or mobile phone/text prior to attending. Address will be provided after enrollment. For allergy awareness, one short-haired dog lives in this home.
