About this Event
The Southeast side of Chicago is an often overlooked and stigmatized neighborhood of the city, blocked by an overcast of misguided interpretation. The region was once part of one of the largest industrial corridors in the world, attracting millions of immigrants from Europe, Latin America, and the American South, who came to work in the steel mills that contributed vitally to building the United States. It had neighborhoods full of life and culture, but that all ended once the steel mills left. On this walking tour, we will learn about the southeast side’s past and how it evolved to what it is now.
The tour is headed by filmmaker Steven Walsh, who is currently producing a documentary about this very subject. The walk will also include an art tour led by community artists Roman Villarreal and Matthew “Shapeless” Rodriguez. And we will conclude the tour with food from local chef Aristotle Munoz of 18th St. and Memo’s Jr.
Metra tickets will be provided. This Urban Hike will include multiple hours of outdoor walking. Please wear comfortable walking shoes, and appropriate clothing for the weather. We also encourage participants to bring preferred snacks and water. Please contact [email protected] with any questions. To request accommodations, please reach out to [email protected].
