About this Event
Hi! I'm Nick Mann, and I talk about edible plants. Join me for a 2.5-hour hike where we'll identify, forage, and taste delicious and healthy weeds, harvesting from the wild abundance that grows across our urban Los Angeles landscape. With all of the rain we've been getting, the weeds are ripe and ready for picking! I'll also point out any toxic lookalikes that we come across. This hike will mostly focus on edible nonnative plants, but there are sections where we will come across a lot of native species as well!
I often get asked about plant ID apps, and I actually want to encourage their use on this walk. While they're often incorrect, and you should never eat anything that you can't 100% identify, plant ID apps can be valuable tools in a balanced outdoor education.
Who am I: If you've seen my videos on YouTube and TikTok, then you know I love talking about edible plants! I'll talk about edible weeds, edible landscaping, edible trees.
When: Saturday, February 28, 2026 from 9:30AM to 12 noon. Please be on time for this one. The hike takes an hour 15 minutes without stops, and there's so much to stop and talk about along the way!
Where: The exact meeting point will be provided after RSVP, but we'll be hiking the Betty B. Dearing Trail, starting and ending at the Fryman Hiking Trail Parking Lot. It's a roughly 3-mile loop with about 500 feet of elevation gain up through TreePeople and back down again. The map pin is NOT accurate. I will reach out before the event to provide directions to the exact meeting point!
Cost: Pay what you can! I don't want money to be a barrier to outdoor education. At the same time, I have put years of study into learning how to safely identify wild edible plants, and I want to share as much of that knowledge as I can. I feel that $30/person is a good starting place. You're welcome to pay here on Eventbrite, but you don't have to. I'm not a fan of transaction fees. I accept anything, and payment on the day is fine with me--Venmo, PayPal, cash, etc. Thank you for the support!
