About this Event
Birds are an important part of our environment, serving as indicators of how healthy an ecosystem is. Join fellow bird lovers observing and appreciating birds in the urban environment of the 3rd oldest neighborhood in New Orleans, the Faubourg Marigny.
We will meet in Washington Square (700 Elysian Fields Ave) near the playground at 8am on Saturday, January 17th. After a brief discussion about birds in urban environments, we will embark upon a walk around the neighborhood to observe our feathered friends using a holistic approach to appreciating them. Science, spirituality and the senses will be engaged on this walk. We will discuss how birds have adapted to fit in our "unnatural" environment and how they have been able to thrive despite several challenges to the contrary. We will consider ways that humans can improve the urban environment to make it more friendly to birds.
This walk will be guided by Helen Sierminski, an Urban Naturalist who observes the birds and the rest of nature on a daily basis in the Marigny. She is a certified Master Naturalist and a practicing Augur (bird divination). She observes and studies nature through a multitude of lenses and believes all things are connected, even humans!
This walk is free but donations are happily accepted.
Please bring binoculars if you have them.
