Meet the Facilitator-Becky Surles
I began creating my “story boxes” a couple of years ago for friends and family. The journey started with a 70-year-old yellow plastic Cadillac toy. My grandfather always wanted a Cadillac, so my grandmother bought him the toy. It’s a cherished story for my brother and me, but the car was tucked away, feeling too precious to discard yet without a place in my home. So, I painted it and placed it in a box with other jokes we share.
Last year, I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. Throughout the 9 months of treatment, which left me depleted, I needed something to keep me busy and bring joy. I began collecting boxes and trinkets from thrift shops, creating non-personal boxes. My friends started asking to buy them and I was running out of space. This is when I decided to take my boxes public.
