More about Prof. Khalil (Charlie) Shahin AO

Charlie is the eldest son of Peregrine Corporation founder, the late Fred (Fathi) Shahin. The Peregrine story started in 1984, with the purchase of a small BP service station in Adelaide. Peregrine grew to become South Australia’s largest privately-owned employer.

More than 6500 staff are spread across its retail operations including fuel and convenience stores, Krispy Kreme, Guzman y Gomez, Hungry Jacks, Subway and Oporto franchises, as well as SMGB stores nationwide - generating more than $3.2 billion in revenue annually. In April of 2023 it was announced the OTR Group and associated trading businesses will be acquired by Viva Energy (the transaction is subject to ACCC approval).

Peregrine also has a large and diverse commercial property portfolio including iconic South Australian landmark CBD sites in Rundle Mall, North Terrace, and King William Street. In 2015, Peregrine started redeveloping the former Mitsubishi Motors Australia test site outside Tailem Bend as The Bend Motorsport Park, which opened in 2017 when it also bought Mallala Motor Sport Park.

Charlie currently serves as a non-executive director of Crescent Wealth, SPC Ltd and is the Chairman of Australian Jordanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He also serves on many other charitable foundations and institutions, both as director and advisor.

Charlie has been the director of the Shahin Charity Trust since 1995 with programs that range from school-based programs to helping fund aged care for the Australian Islamic community.

On Australia Day 2017, Charlie received an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) based on his distinguished services to business and commerce as well as his philanthropy as an advocate for corporate & social responsibility.

In 2022, Charlie was awarded 2 Industry Professorships to both the University of South Australia and the University of Western Sydney. He holds degrees in Agricultural Science from The American University of Beirut and Adelaide University.
