BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Joyce Wong, flute

Joyce’s musical journey began with piano lessons at the age of six, and flute at the age of ten. Since immigrating to Vancouver, Canada at the age of 14, she has won top prices at local competitions, such as the Vancouver Kiwanis Festival and the Richmond Music Festival. She continues studying piano up to this day, after having completed level 10 during her first year of university with First Class Honors. As an enthusiastic orchestral and chamber musician, Joyce has played principle flute with the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra in 2015, the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra, as well as the symphony orchestras of the University of British Columbia and University of Ottawa. She also participated in uOttawa’s 2023 Chamber Finals Competition, and as a result performed at National Arts Center’s Fourth Stage as part of the Chamber Music Ensemble Showcase in March 2024. Her summers were not spent idle. She has participated in festivals such as the Vancouver’s Blueridge Chamber Festival, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute, Orford Musique, and Domaine Forget, the latter two which she was fortunate to perform in masterclasses for such artists as Paul Edmund Davies, Sooyun Kim, Ramson Wilson, and Emmanuel Pahud. Currently studying with Carolyn Christie at uOttawa, she is expected to earn her Masters of Music degree in flute performance after having completed her Bachelor of Music and Artist Diploma degrees at UBC, where she studied with Christie Reside.

Additionally, she travelled to Halifax where she sang the lead role, Rose Michon, in the Canadian premiere of La Jolie Parfumeuse at the Halifax Summer Opera Festival. Ashley sang with UWOpera for many years and a highlight includes playing the title role, Gretel, in Hansel and Gretel. As well, Ashley was selected to participate in an intensive opera program in Edmonton, Alberta, performing the role of Anna Gomez in The Consul with Opera NUOVA.
