Unutai e! Unutai e! harnesses the power of contemporary art to shed light on an urgent crisis: the deteriorating state of fresh water across Ngāi Tahu lands. Join freshwater ecologist Mike Joy (at 3pm) for a talk. Mike will be joined by members of the Unutai e! Unutai e! working group—including Gabrielle Huria, Chief Executive of Te Kura Taka Pini (the Ngāi Tahu Freshwater Strategy group). Gabrielle will share a selection of poems from her recently released poetry collection Pakiaka.
Mike Joy is a freshwater ecologist living in Aotearoa New Zealand. He is the Morgan Foundation Senior Research Fellow in Freshwater Ecology at the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington. In 2024 he released the memoir The Fight for Freshwater, which describes the science that led him to advocate for the health of our waterways.
After the talk (from 4pm –5pm) Dr Anne Noble, the artist enlisted to capture and document this crisis, will be available within the exhibition for questions and conversation about the project.
