Humans have a natural inclination to categorize and compartmentalize in order to comprehend our complex world. In defiance of this impulse, unstuck is a live art exhibition that embraces divergent performance practices by artists who have freed themselves from traditional disciplines to thrive in the spaces between them.
Often artists find themselves mired within particular mediums, constrained by established conventions and the guardians who uphold them. This is particularly pronounced in the United States, where we love putting people and things in categories with defined edges. unstuck includes artists who, despite feeling the gravitational pull of conventional disciplines, actively resist to find freedom within the interstitial spaces of art forms where they are then unstuck.
Curators Joseph Ravens and Michelle Kranicke worked together in 2011 on a project that explored the nuanced relationship between dance and performance art. Fast forward and over a decade later they continue to explore the ongoing dialogue between these two disciplines. Ravens and Kranicke invited artists who, with various approaches, consider the human body as a foundational element when giving form to time and space.
The unstuck performances occur within an unconventional and ephemeral structure built by David Sundry at SITE/less, a guerrilla storefront positioned as an experimental architecture, movement, and research center.
