Unseen and Unprotected: Modern Slavery in the Shadow of Migration

What are the realities and struggles faced by individuals and communities vulnerable to trafficking? What steps can be taken to combat the evil of modern slavery in an era of large-scale migration? Join us at Jesus College, Cambridge, to find out. Coffee and lunch are provided.

Join us in person at 9am on Monday, 9th February, for a one-day symposium at Jesus College, University of Cambridge, organised by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the University of Cambridge, on the realities of modern slavery hidden behind migration stories.

Confirmed Speakers:

  • Professor Carole Murphy, Director of the Bakhita Centre for Research on Slavery, Exploitation and Abuse, St Mary's University Twickenham, London
  • Dr Adedayo Akingbade, Lecturer in Law, Manchester Metropolitan University
  • Dr Maja Grundler, Assistant Professor in Law, University of Northumbria
  • Dr. Vasileia Digidiki Lucero, Director of the FXB Center Program on Distress Migration, FXB Centre for Health and Human Rights
  • Dr. Juncal Fernandez-Garayzabal, Research Fellow, European Foundation for South Asian Studies
  • Dr Evgenia Iliadou, Department of Politics, University of Surrey
  • Ms Katerina Pekridou, The Conference of European Churches
  • Dr. Marietta van der Tol, Assistant Research Professor, Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge
  • Dr. Maria Turda, Connect Centre for International Research on Interpersonal Violence and Harm, University of Central Lancashire

The conference brings together policy-makers, academics and church leaders for panel discussions and planning of action to address:

• The root causes of exploitation across migration pathways;

• The trafficking of vulnerable groups (particularly women and children) in conflict and post-conflict zones;

• Policy failures and global protection frameworks;

• Advocacy, justice initiatives, and the role of the Church in addressing these challenges.

The event is jointly organised by The Ecumenical Patriarchate (the Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain) and the University of Cambridge, and brings together academics, policy-makers, practitioners, religious organisations, and representatives of civil society to address the complex intersections between migration, vulnerability, and modern slavery.
