Opening December 6: Positive Space Presents “Unreal” by Brooklyn-based Artist Jacquelyn Strycker In "Unreal," Jacquelyn Strycker, with a practice merging printmaking, collage, and textiles through the process of risograph printing, presents objects that look like one thing but are decidedly another. These works occupy the space between representation and reality, functioning as ideas of quilts, ideas of textiles, ideas of domestic objects rather than the objects themselves. Strycker’s works maintain this amorphous quality, hovering between categories, refusing to settle into a single identity. “Unreal” invites us to reconsider what we value in objects, and what makes something “real” when authenticity itself has become such a slippery concept.
About the Artist: Jacquelyn Strycker is a Brooklyn-based artist working primarily in printmaking, collage and fibers-based media. She is concerned with the relationship between decoration and function, and invested in material exploration and handicraft. Strycker has a BA in Visual Arts from Columbia University and an MFA from Tyler School of Art. Her work is in the collection of the New York Public Library and Memorial Sloan Kettering, and has recently been exhibited at Print Center New York; Weatherspoon Museum, Greensboro, NC; Hunterdon Art Museum, NJ; Kathryn Markel Fine Art, New York; Tyger Tyger Gallery, Asheville, NC; and Collar Works, Troy, NY. She has participated in residencies at Institute for Electronic Arts, Alfred, The Women’s Studio Workshop, and the Vermont Studio Center. She is a 2024 NYFA Finalist in Painting, and a co-director of Peep Space in Tarrytown, NY.
