"My soul would sing of metamorphoses." (Ovid)UNMENSCH (Monster) explores the transformative world of early Italian Opera, where Myth, Music and Mensch collide in radical reinterpretations of identity and desire. Taking the enigmatic figure of the castrato as its starting point, this exquisitely crafted performance examines the voice as a locus of metamorphosis, shifting between the angelic and the demonic, between masculinity and femininity, an object of both desire and aversion.
Performed by Canadian countertenor Michael Taylor and the baroque Dansant Ensemble on period instruments, UNMENSCH weaves a new story of transformation through excerpts from Monteverdi's "L'Incoronnazione di Poppea", Cavalli's "Il Giasone", Caccini's "La Liberazione di Ruggiero" and all the way back to some of the earliest examples of Italian opera with Da Gagliano's "La Dafne".
The performance is accompanied by original video art created by Silvia Dierkes, whose work fuses elements of historical gesture and sculpture with live animation techniques.
