About this Event
PROFESSOR LASZLO RADVANYI
President & Scientific Director, Ontario Institute for Cancer Research; Professor, Department of Immunology, University of Toronto
Dr. Radvanyi will introduce the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research and describe the research strategy, technology resources, major research programs as well as international collaborations of the institute. OICR is the second largest funder of external peer-reviewed cancer research in Canada in addition to having a large (>325 staff) internal internationally-recognized group of scientists in its downtown Toronto facility in the areas of cancer genomics, molecular biology, biomarker and diagnostics development and cancer-related population health studies. OICR’s key role is to translate the best discovery science into the clinic by developing the best precision oncology tools. The institute supports clinical trials synergizing with its focus on cancer detection, minimal-residual disease monitoring at earlier stages of cancer (especially in the liquid biopsy field) and therapeutics to improve patient clinical management with the aim of eradicating primary-diagnosed cancer and inhibiting later stage relapse. In addition, Dr. Radvanyi will present some data on his own research that has uncovered a novel mechanism of action of re-expressed retrotransposable elements (the “dark genome”) in cancer in regulating the immune response in cancer patients and new therapeutic targets in this area.
Professor Laszlo Radvanyi is the President & Scientific Director of the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research bringing over 30 years of oncology research background in academia and leadership experience in international pharma and biotech. He is also a Professor in the Immunology Department at the University of Toronto where his research focuses on the role of non-coding regions, including retrotransposable elements and human endogenous retroviruses, in cancer development and as modulators of the immune response in cancer patients.
