On Friday and Saturday, October 24th and 25th, The Mahoning Drive-In resurrects everyone’s favorite graveyard smash with UNIVERSAL MONSTER MASH IX, two nights of classic Universal monsters in malevolent monochrome, three terrifying tales of creatures creeping across the big, BIG screen!
Join us for a celebration of black and white things that go bump in the night, in our last full weekend of the season, with 35mm presentations (with a digital desert) of six sinister servings of deep dish delights from the dark corners of Universal’s mausoleum of monsters!
Friday night begins with HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1944), a monster rally filled with frightening fiends! Frankenstein’s Monster! The Wolf Man! Dracula! The Hunchback! The Mad Doctor! They’re all under one raucous roof! Boris Karloff stars as the previously pointed-out perturbed scientist who rounds up the mentioned monsters and uses them for…revenge! With Lon Chaney, Jr., J. Carrol Naish, John Caradine, George Zucco, and Philip Van Zandt!
If you escape that mad HOUSE alive, run to the next one you see…knock on the door…and scream in terror as you find yourself at the HOUSE OF DRACULA (1945)! We present a special 80th Anniversary screening of the final film in the original run of Universal Monsters, in which The Wolf Man and Count Dracula seek sweet release from their creature discomforts from the Mad Doctor, but not without creepy complications! With John Carradine, Lon Chaney, Jr., Glenn Strange, Lionel Atwill, and Skelton Knaggs!
You flee that HOUSE of horrors, and run through the dark of night until you find yourself on a the grounds of a university. At last! Civilization and safety! Time to relax and check the syllabus. Excuse me? What? There’s a MONSTER ON THE CAMPUS (1958)??? We dip a digital toe into the churning waters of 1950s Universal horror with this rah-rah-riveting tale of a petrifying professor who becomes a barbaric beast, stalking the hallowed halls of a cowering college, unnerving underclassmen and scarifying seniors! Directed by Jack Arnold (CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE) and featuring Arthur Franz, Troy Donahue, Joanna Moore, and Whit Bissell!
Saturday night whisks you away to Jolly Old England for a not-so-jovial tale of a man who finds himself in the unenviable position of being the WEREWOLF OF LONDON (1935)! We present a special 90th Anniversary screening of Universal’s first werewolf film, starring Henry Hull as the troubled titular lonely lycanthrope, a botanist who returns from Tibet after being attacked by an unseen creature, only to find that his nights are becoming a blur of hairy, howling horrors! With Warner Oland, Valerie Hobson, and Wong Chung!
You hop a steamer across the sea to rid yourself of the memory (and scars) of our first fearsome feature, to the relative safety of sunny Florida. While you’re there, visit scenic Jacksonville, and spend a sunny afternoon at Ocean Harbor Oceanarium, where they have a new aquatic amazement on display…the Creature From The Black Lagoon! Unfortunately, he’s not happy being displayed in chains for tourists, breaking free and terrorizing the townsfolk in REVENGE OF THE CREATURE (1955)! Thrill to a 70th Anniversary 2D presentation of this 50’s classic, with John Agar, Lori Nelson, Nestor Paiva, and Clint Eastwood!
Deciding maybe Florida isn’t for you, you book a trip to Transylvania…your taxi drops you off in the middle of nowhere and you walk down a dark and dusty road…suddenly you spy a castle on a hill, a light in the window offering hope of safe haven…you knock on the door and find Spanish-speaking solace for the night…your host’s name? DRACULA (1931)! After years of requests, we at long last present the highly acclaimed Spanish-language version of DRACULA, shot on the same sets as Todd Browning’s Bela Lugosi classic, with a different cast and crew. Starring Carlos Villarias at the never-sanguinarily-satisfied nobleman, this moody, stylish alternate take on the legend is revered by many, and we’re excited to present it in this digital, subtitled form on the giant outdoor screen for an atmospheric adios to the evening. With Lupita Tovar, Barry Norton, and Pablo Alvarez.
Gates open at 6pm each night, showtime at 7:30.
Arrive early for a themed DJ set, raffle, food specials and more fun!
