E. Grieg: From Holberg’s Time, Op.40
Edvard Grieg (1843–1907) wrote this suite in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian writer Ludvig Holberg. He used the style of Baroque dances to honor Holberg’s time, but with his own Romantic melodies and harmonies.
I. Praeludium (Allegro vivace)
A bright and energetic opening, full of running rhythms, setting a festive tone.
II. Sarabande (Andante)
Slow and stately, with a noble character and warm, expressive harmonies.
V. Rigaudon (Allegro con brio)
A lively French dance with playful rhythms. The middle section brings a tender duet before the energetic ending.
