Unfinished independences / Echoes of a scattered history

is a programme conceived of by Olivier Marboeuf as part of the 2023/24, a University of London Institute in Paris initiative.

While the winds of independence were blowing in the former French (and British) colonies in the early 1960s, empire was clinging on to its ‘island dust’ [poussières d’îles] in the Caribbean and elsewhere. Forced pacification, the repression of struggles and the dispersal of peoples aimed to cut these territories off from an international movement and keep them in a golden isolation. What forms will emerge from this European exile, what traces of this history will reach us?

Alors qu’au début des années 60 souffle le vent des indépendances dans les anciennes colonies françaises (et anglaises), l’empire s’accroche à ses « poussières d’îles » dans la Caraïbe et ailleurs. Pacification forcée, répression des luttes et dispersions des peuples visent à couper ces territoires d’un mouvement international et à les conserver dans un isolement doré.
