Dr. Deni Seymour will present an update on her groundbreaking archaeological research following her landmark discovery six years ago of the first evidence that Francisco Vázquez de Coronado traveled through Santa Cruz County. Since that time, continued excavations have uncovered remarkable new findings, including a second bronze cannon dating to the 1540s and 17 separate sites. These discoveries strengthen the case that the Santa Cruz site is the long-sought Villa of Suya described in expedition records. This site represents the oldest known European settlement in what is now the United States—predating St. Augustine and established decades before Jamestown. A selection of the newly discovered artifacts will be on display during the lecture.
Your ticket includes the lecture, park admission, light bites, and refreshments, including wine.
