About this Event

Please join us for our in-town, indoor lecture series!

Mosquitoes have shaped life in Southwest Florida for centuries, long before air conditioning and mosquito control made the area more livable. In this talk, presented by Andrea McKinney, we’ll explore the unique conditions that make our region a mosquito hotspot, from our warm temperatures and seasonal rainfall to our low-lying landscapes. We'll look at the ecological role mosquitoes play as pollinators, decomposers, and a food source for fish, birds, and other animals, while also discussing the challenges they pose to public health and comfort in populated areas. By the end, you’ll gain a better understanding of how today’s mosquito control works to strike a balance of protecting people while respecting the natural systems we all depend on.

Andrea McKinney is a Public Outreach and Education Specialist for the Collier Mosquito Control District, where she has been a key team member since 2018. With 19 years of experience in public health, Andrea designs and delivers engaging, standards-aligned mosquito education programs for K–12 students, leads facility tours, and spearheads community outreach efforts. She works closely with local partners to promote public health awareness and mosquito prevention. Andrea is an active member of the Florida Mosquito Control Association, where she teaches at the DODD Short Course, and currently serves as the Education Day Coordinator for the American Mosquito Control Association’s Public Relations committee.
