Learn how to make sense of numbers, budgets, and financial reports in an engaging way and in a peer support environment
About this Event

This course provides a basic grounding in key financial areas that concern staff and volunteers working in the Third Sector, as well as analysing financial performance to help managers meet requirements more effectively.

The training is suitable for Third Sector managers, workers and volunteers who have financial responsibilities and need to understand the content of financial statements and reports used in business, and learn to interpret this information and use it to manage day-to-day business activity.

Key areas of study are:

  • Understanding the main Financial Account Statements; Balance Sheet and Statement of Financial Activities (SOFA). Real Charity Financial Statements will be analysed.
  • Financial Controls, measures used to identify problems and opportunities.
  • Case Study on Charity Financial Statements. Participants will work in groups to review, comment and suggest issues with a set of Charity Financial Statements.

There will also be networking opportunities with other Third Sector organisations in attendance; best practice and common issues can be discussed over lunch and during specific points in the session.

This course is part of a research project and is led by the University of Dundee, School of Business in collaboration with Third Sector Interface Perth and Kinross, Dundee Volunteer and Voluntary Action, and the Association of Accounting Technicians. Dr Paul Caulfield will run the session on the day; Paul is an experienced Lecturer as well as a qualified Management Accountant of many years' experience in industry.

Light lunch will be provided.

Please note that the organisers reserve the right to cancel the event by Friday 4 January if attendance numbers are not sufficient to deliver this training course.
