Join Littlefield Action for Social Justice at the First Congregational Church of Detroit (33 E. Forest) on Saturday, March 4, 2023 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm for an Underground Railroad experience.
First Congregational Church of Detroit was established in 1844 at Fort and Wayne Streets near the Detroit River and participated in the Underground Railroad. The basement of one of its buildings was used to hide those escaping slavery while en route to boats at the foot of Wayne Street that would take them across the river to freedom in Canada. The congregation moved to its current location at Woodward and Forest in 1891.
They offer an Underground Railroad reenactment experience. Visitors transform into passengers on the Underground Railroad and are led to freedom by a conductor. Passengers hide from bounty hunters, cross the Ohio "Deep" river, take retreat in a safe house in Indiana which is owned by Abolitionist Levi Coffin. Finally, passengers move to “Midnight,” the code name for Detroit and take safe haven at the First Congregational Church of Detroit before moving on to Canada and “Freedom.”
Appropriate for ages 8 and above. Being able to walk up stairs is helpful for the full experience. Please arrive at 10:30 am.
Go to LA4SJ.org to register and prepay. $14 adults, $12 children
