The Maude Abbott Medical Museum and the MSS Humanities and Arts in Medicine Club invite you to the 2025 edition of Immortalizing the Mortal! 🤗WHAT?
Use art–poetry, sketch, dance, photography or any other medium–to give a life and a story to what was once a medical specimen. 🎨
This year’s specimen is a cerebral aneurysm located near the circle of Willis. Can you guess which artery is affected? 🤓
This specimen invites us to explore the silent presence of disease and the profound weight of medical decisions, especially when faced with incidental findings.
Optional: We invite you to learn about an aneurysm case beautifully narrated by Henry Marsh in Chapter 2 of Do No Harm. Let it spark your curiosity and fuel your creativity! Imagine yourself in the patient’s position—would you undergo invasive brain surgery, or would you choose to live with the uncertainty of a cerebral aneurysm? Scan the QR codes (e-book or audiobook) to access the first part of the chapter; the story’s conclusion will be unveiled at the event! 📖
HOW?
1) Sign up on the Microsoft Form as an artist or as a guest: https://forms.office.com/r/umBqCfjEbV.
2) Take a closer look at the specimen during a specimen viewing session with Dr. Richard Fraser–you will have the chance to stop by the museum to see it in person if you would like to do so (dates TBD). Stay tuned for the sign-up form, which will soon be shared under the discussion tab.
3) Create!
4) Come to the event with your artwork. Present your artwork, discover other artists, and take part in some interesting discussions. Snacks and drinks will be provided!
