About this Event

This October and November, we’ll be returning to site to open up two exciting new trenches as part of our continuing investigation of the Severan building at Roman Carlisle.

Trench One will focus on the northwest corner of the Severan building – a previously unexplored area that we hope will shed new light on the layout of this significant Roman structure. We're particularly hoping to uncover further sections of the Roman drain, confirm the presence of external wall lines, and potentially reveal evidence of a tower – a feature hinted at during earlier phases of excavation.

Trench Two will revisit a set of pebble surfaces previously exposed toward the northern end of the building. This area holds a complex sequence of archaeological deposits, and our aim is to finalise our investigation of the stratigraphy – the layers of surfaces and material – to better understand how the building developed and changed over time.

YWe will do our best to accommodate movement of volunteers around tasks - but please book one activity per person, per day.

Yes, you did read that right – we’re starting on a Sunday!

The dig will begin on Sunday 26th October, and we’ll be on site most days after that.

However, there will be no excavation on Saturday 1st November, as the Bitts Park Fire Show takes place that evening. This is at the request of Carlisle Cricket Club, and we’re more than happy to support it by taking a well-earned break that day.

Whether you're a returning volunteer or new to the project, this is a fantastic opportunity to be part of uncovering the next chapter of Roman Carlisle’s story:
