This course teaches us how to make the unconscious, conscious; a critical tool in minimizing the impacts of bias on our decisions.
About this Event

Mandatory unconscious bias training has existed for decades. We know; we've taught hundreds of iterations. Still, we look around and see baby steps with regards to progress in how we see, treat, and relate to each other. But why? What or who is to blame for this lack of meaningful change?

It becomes easy to point the finger at unconscious biases; things that just happen as a result of what goes on in our subconscious. In truth however, we see people based on our already existing values, experiences, threats, and rewards. People make unfair and unhealthy decisions and choices based on bias everyday, rarely going back to think about the drivers. What is more, most people are inherently good and yet their decisions and choices yield negative impacts. This creates tension, anger, and resentment. All of this just furthers already existing inequities and divisions.

It is for all of these reasons that despite the booming training market, we have made a human decision to no longer teach unconscious bias. Continuing to do so will only serve to further the narrative that bias is something we ultimately have little knowledge or control over. The fact is, bias can be better managed though not until we understand its manifestations and influences.

Unconscious By Us is a course facilitated by trained and certified Diversity Executives and Master Facilitators. They have been frequently called to assess diversity and inclusion cultures and facilitate change in several high-stress, high-visibility environments to include the George Floyd M**der, Charlottesville Race Riots, and hundreds of organizations ranging from 123 to 17,000 people.

The training is both immersive and inclusive. What is more, the facilitators are experienced and adept at introducing and balancing realistic, raw, and often emotional topics in a manner that enables understanding and learning. Facilitators will teach practical and easy-to-understand concepts around:

  • How our mind works
  • How we see and respond to threats
  • How we filter (delete, distort, generalize, stereotype) information based on our influencers
  • Common bias decisions and how they originate and fester
  • The Bias Chain (how bias begets bias)
  • How we can make the unconscious, conscious

This content will be delivered in a small class (no more than 10 people) environment to maximize the level of participation and inclusion.

Sign up for this course if:

  • You want an honest and safe environment in which to discuss bias and it's impacts in both workplace and national-level environments
  • You are looking to be a better, more connected leader when it comes to understanding and managing your own biases
  • You tire of training that does not ultimately get to the heart of the matter

Bias is real and always will be. That said, we must begin to see it and approach it from a different perspective than simply acknowledging it exists, learning the different types, and encouraging people to check their own biases. People cannot reasonably check or improve on something that they do not fully understand. There are realities with how our mind works and the impact our experiences have on our decisions. They can and should be introduced in a manner that is easy to understand and invites honest, respectful dialogue. How else do we move forward? How else do we improve our interrelations? How else do we make the unconscious, conscious?
