In this four hour class participants will be taught the basics of Ukrainian Egg decorating, celebrating the perseverance of Ukrainian culture. The craft involves a live candle flame, a cake of beeswax, an eggshell, and a kitska writing tool. The tools and supplies are simple. The meanings of the symbols and the stories that the eggs share are complex and varied. Participants will learn some of the heritage and lore of the eggs. The eggs are expressions of love. Love of others in the giving of a gift. Love of tradition in giving our time to something ancient and a deep seated love of the natural world in that the symbols and images on the egg are all taken from our beautiful world. The art predates Christianity in the Ukraine so there are many pagan symbols also present.
Each person will be given two blank and empty chicken eggshells that can be decorated the day of the workshop and a kit that includes dyes to bring home to continue to practice. It is expected that both eggs can be completed on the day of the workshop.
All supplies will be provided. Please wear clothes that you are ok with getting dye on.
Class size: 8 minimum, 10 max
