On March 27, 2025 Ukraine House will host the official opening of "Ukraine Before the War: Nature Paintings by David Miretsky," a deeply evocative exhibition by the eminent Ukrainian-American artist showcasing a never-before-seen series of fifteen landscapes from a private collection. These paintings capture the serene natural beauty of the artist’s native Ukraine before the 2022 Russian invasion. They combine Miretsky’s astonishing mastery of color and composition with an intimate vision that is both timeless and full of meaning for the present moment: in the midst of war, the beauty of Ukraine’s nature endures.
Born in Kyiv in 1939, David Miretsky experienced a life marked by hardship and political adversity. Denied higher education due to the anti-Jewish discriminatory policies of the Soviet regime, the artist persisted and eventually was admitted to the Kyiv Art Institute, where his talent was immediately recognized. His passion for human rights led to multiple arrests by Soviet authorities, including for his activism at Babyn Yar; ultimately, Miretsky sought refuge and artistic freedom in the United States.
Upon arriving in America, Miretsky was represented by the legendary Ivan Karp of OK Harris Gallery in New York. The artist’s work has been featured in major exhibitions across the globe,
and his pieces are housed in significant collections, including that of the National Art Museum of Ukraine. His recent retrospective exhibition at Adam Cohen’s gallery in New York was a remarkable success. (For further examples of Miretsky’s art, visit: https://DavidMiretsky.art)
Join the artist, dignitaries, and art lovers for an evening that promises visual splendor and a journey through Ukraine’s rich cultural history. The event will begin with light refreshments at 5:00 PM, followed by the artist's presentation at 6:00 PM. All proceeds from sales of posters, etc., go to support Ukraine House.
