LECTURE ABSTRACT
Costs of Sprawl, Including in the Area of Traffic Safety
Sprawl has become the dominant development pattern in the United States, largely due to market failures such as the failure to consider the high costs of traffic accidents accompanying sprawl. This lecture will describe the characteristics, causes, and costs of sprawl, plus potential cures, contrasting the views of economists and planners. The documented costs include pedestrian fatalities, physical inactivity and obesity, automobile dependence, lack of upward mobility, shortened life span, lower rates of innovation, food deserts, and more. The talk is based on peer reviewed research in many articles and the book, co-authored by the speaker, The Costs of Sprawl (Routledge 2017). The tide seems to be turning toward compact development and away from sprawl, and these demographic and lifestyle changes will be discussed as well.
