I would like to warmly invite you to the following event: Tó: nya’teká:yen entewà:ronke’ – Normalizing “gifted oration” a talk with Tahohtharátye Joe Brant, an advanced Onkwehonwehnéha (Mohawk language) speaker, language activist, and Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto.The talk is on November 13th, 4:30 pm in Room ARTS 150 .
Tahohtharátye from the Tyendinaga Mohawk Nation Territory where he has been an elementary school teacher, principal, and researcher in Kanyen'kéha language documentation.
In this presentation, Tahohtharátye will discuss the opportunities and challenges he has faced in pursuit of “nya’teká:yen tsi yonhrónkha” proficiency as an Onkwehonwehnéha language learner. The current state of endangerment in Kanyen’kehá:ka communities, calls for urgent action and the need for innovative approaches to increase learners' proficiency.
He will be discussing important considerations in learning, speaking, and teaching Onkwehonwehnéha, a language that expresses the vast collective knowledge and experiences of the Kanyen’kehá:ka civilization.
