De Tibère « l’hypocrite » à Commode « le psychopathe », les récits modernes ont souvent forgé une image sombre du pouvoir impérial romain. Mary Beard, professeure émérite à Cambridge et figure incontournable de la littérature antique, remet en question cette vision dominante : comment interpréter ce que les auteurs antiques disaient de leurs empereurs ? Ces discours constituent-ils une critique de l’autocratie ? Et que peuvent-ils nous apprendre sur nos sociétés contemporaines, où les médias comparent régulièrement les dirigeants actuels aux empereurs romains ?

From Tiberius “the hypocrite” to Commodus “the psychopath,” modern accounts have often shaped a dark image of Roman imperial power. Mary Beard, Emerita Professor at Cambridge and a leading figure in classical literature, challenges this dominant view: how should we interpret what ancient authors wrote about their emperors? Do these texts represent a critique of autocracy? And what can they teach us about our contemporary societies, where the media frequently compare today’s leaders to Roman emperors?
👩🏫 Mary Beard is also the author of the bestselling books SPQR, Pompeii and Emperor of Rome, as well as BBC documentary series and the podcast Instant Classics.
