The epic tale of Adi Purana comes alive through Bharatanatyam and Yakshagana, where power, sacrifice, and storytelling take centre stage in a captivating performance.
Power has long been measured by conquest, but history remembers those who choose a different path – one of wisdom, restraint, and self-realisation. In this spirit, ‘Tyāg’ brings to life the legendary conflict between Bharata and Bahubali, the sons of Rishabhadeva, as told in Adi Purana, the 10th-century Kannada epic by Adikavi Pampa. Adapted from the original text written in Champu style – a blend of prose and verse – this masterpiece explores the soul’s journey towards enlightenment. At its core is a defining moment as Bahubali, victorious in battle, relinquishes his claim to the throne, embracing renunciation over rule. His choice reshapes the course of time, becoming a model for Jain narratives that followed.
This powerful story unfolds through Bharatanatyam and Yakshagana – two artistic traditions that combine movement, music, and theatrical depth. Bharatanatyam’s graceful storytelling meets Yakshagana’s dynamic, larger-than-life showcase – where striking costumes, pulsating rhythms, and spontaneous dialogue create an electrifying experience. Rooted in Natyashastra, Yakshagana embodies Chaturvida Abhinaya (the four modes of expression) and sacred Poorvaranga rituals, preserving the essence of both Indian classical and folk traditions.
Presented by Parshwanath Upadhye and Shridhar Keremane, ‘Tyāg’ unites two artistic legacies in a performance of extraordinary depth. Sri Idagunji Mahaganapati Yakshagana Mandali, Keremane (R) – a UNESCO-recognised institution – has safeguarded Yakshagana’s legacy for over 90 years, with sixth-generation artist Keremane Shridhara Hegde continuing this vibrant tradition.
In a world driven by ambition, ‘Tyāg’ tells the story of a man who found strength in surrender, proving that true victory is not always won on the battlefield.
