Part of Hancher's 52nd SeasonA master choreographer’s acclaimed Hancher-commissioned work is part of the 60th anniversary celebration of Tharp's dance company.
In 1999, the American premiere of Twyla Tharp’s "Diabelli"—choreographed to Beethoven’s thorny and thrilling "Diabelli Variations" and commissioned by Hancher—took place on the stage of the original Hancher Auditorium. Now, as part of the 60th anniversary tour of Twyla Tharp Dance, the work returns home so Hancher patrons can once again revel in the composer and choreographer’s conversation, which includes vocabulary from an array of dance styles including ballet, jazz, modern, social, and street. Also on the program, a new work entitled "Slack Tide," featuring Philip Glass’s "Aguas Da Amazonia," which was arranged and will be performed live by Hancher favorites Third Coast Percussion on a collection of custom-designed instruments.
“To say Twyla Tharp is still at it after all these years would be inaccurate. Because there is never anything still about Twyla Tharp.” — The Washington Post
[Philip Glass’s] spare and layered compositions can be interpreted in many ways other than as written, and ... Third Coast Percussion brings even more layers to Glass’s Aguas da Amazonia ... [T]hese musicians brought an exquisite sense of joy to their performance.” — Third Coast Review
