About this Event
Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have postponed this workshop until Thursday July 26th!!
The Western Slope of Colorado is a challenging place to grow vegetables due to a short growing season, variable climatic events, drought, and difficult soils. Many of us purchase seed from companies that centralize growing operations in regions not comparable to Colorado’s unique environment. Though, there are seed growers in Colorado and surrounding states who are breeding vegetable varieties that are adapted to local conditions. A thriving local seed economy has the potential to increase farm sustainability and community resilience. At the Western Colorado Research Center – Rogers Mesa, we are performing experimental trials on these regional and non-regional varieties, side-by-side. Through these trials, we identify the traits that are fit for the Western Slope and tasty to consumers. Come and hear about our results, and how to help your farm and garden by utilizing regionally adapted seed.
Includes an overview of the project from Dr. Brad Tonnenssen along with interesting takeaways from comparing regional & non-regional varieties from Dr. Analissa Sarno. Our Research, Max Kirks, will follow with an interactive field tour.
