About this Event

Two-Day Extreme Wabi-Sabi Encaustic Texture, Cracks, and Embedding Workshop
Saturday and Sunday, January 31-Feb 1, 2026

Day One: Saturday, January 31 | 10:30 AM - 2:00 PM

  • Start by pouring plaster of Paris to create texture and learn how to generate cracks on the surface.
  • Create an underpainting using joint compound, grout, and Powertex (fabric hardener).
  • Embed a variety of materials including heavy papers, cardboard, fabrics, nails, buttons, shells, sticks, and stones.
  • Learn several other ways to create large and fine cracks to add unique texture to your work.

Note: Day One is shorter as we are using a lot of wet products that require 24-hour drying time, so some students may finish early.

Day Two: Sunday, Feb 1 | 10:30 AM - 4:30 PM

  • Apply encaustic medium and explore the tactile qualities that encaustic is known for.
  • Add texture, incisions, patinas, patterns, gold leaf, transfer foil, feathers, and R&F pigment sticks.
  • Learn to create both textured surfaces and the ultra-smooth finish (the "holy grail" of encaustic!).

Materials

  • All supplies are included, except for wood panels.
  • Students must bring their own panels (up to 3 panels):
    • 2-3 panels sized 8x10
    • 2-3 panels sized 10x10
(Larger sizes are not permitted, and a maximum of 3 panels can be worked on for a series).
    • New to encaustic? Start with the 8x10 panels.

What is Encaustic?
Encaustic is an ancient art form that involves using heat to melt natural beeswax and dammar resin. The medium can be used alone or mixed with pigments to create rich textures and vibrant colors. Each layer is applied and reheated to fuse it to the previous layer, creating a dynamic, long-lasting piece of art
