What is a Native Ways of Knowing Literacy Training?

Native Ways of Knowing Literacy Training is an in-person 2-day experiential learning experience to explore teaching K-12 readers about Native Ways of Knowing by introducing them to the rich cultural traditions, beliefs, and perspectives of Native American people and Tribal history.

Who is the target audience?

K-12 educators, librarians, administrators, paraprofessionals, Title VI Indian Education committees, Tribal language instructors, Tribal education staff, and families

What is the learning focus in the two-day training?

Participants will learn Native Ways of Knowing read-aloud literacy strategies to teach and promote more culturally and linguistically responsive libraries and classrooms.

What will participants receive at the training?

Participants will receive a set of award-winning Native American authored books, Native Ways of Knowing Book Guides, lesson plans with indigenized teaching framework, read aloud strategies, and place-based learning activities.

Why is this training so unique and powerful?

Participants will expand their literary collection with works by Native American and Alaska Native authors and illustrators who employ Indigenous storytelling techniques, showcasing the diversity and sovereignty of Tribal languages and Native cultures.
