About this Event
As an introduction, they will discuss together the different types of marquetry and Jonathan will describe the process of selecting veneers for best visual effect. Students will each saw their own packet of veneers by hand, made up of three contrasting woods, and assemble them to make three design panels. Individual pieces will then be sand shaded to enhance the depth of the design before being glued onto a backing board and finished with oil or shellac. The design and process will follow historical examples from 17th century furniture and musical instruments and will be executed using traditional hand tools.
Students will come away with a solid understanding of marquetry and 1-3 finished pieces of work.
