You are invited to attend House TwinOaks’ annual archery practice and bonfire. This event is meant to coincide with the festival of Beltane (May 1st), but due to scheduling conflicts it will be held on Saturday, May 17th, 2025.House TwinOaks was a household of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), so participants at this event are asked to wear an attempt at pre-17th century garb.
This event is a ‘season-opener’, so participants should expect that the weather will be uncertain, and most likely chilly. The theme for this event, if there is one, would be “Bring Your Own Everything”. This includes seating, warm clothing, pop-up sun shades and picnic supplies.
This year I have invited the Rosstad Norsefolk! Please feel free to come with a Viking theme.
Site Information:
This event is located at 211W Gosfield North Concession 8, south of the town of Essex. It can be most easily located by traveling to Kimball’s Lumber and heading east to the first house on the north side of Concession 8.
The site is damp – this means that alcohol is permitted, provided that the empties are cleaned up. I'll be providing some beverages to counter the lack of drinking water on site
The site is rustic – this means that there are limited modern facilities. There is a farmhouse, but there is a single working bathroom. The well-water has a sulfur taste. I will be providing some bottled water, but participants are encouraged to bring their own beverages.
Scheduled Events:
Setup: 1pm
Archery/Thrown Weapons: 3pm-6pm
Pot-luck Supper: 6pm-8pm
Bonfire: 8pm-whenever
All times are approximate and flexible depending on participation and light levels
Details:
This event starts officially at 3pm. Anyone wanting to arrive earlier to help set up is welcome. This includes setting up your own encampment/tent/etc.
I personally will be on site by 1pm. My personal cellphone number is 226-344-9793, should anyone need to contact me.
As soon as the marshals are ready, there will be archery and thrown weapons practice. Some loaner archery supplies are available. The ranges will be open until around 6pm.
After 6pm is scheduled a pot-luck supper. There will be limited ability to heat up food. Each participant is encouraged to bring food that can either be plugged in (such as in a crock pot), or heated over an open fire.
If the weather turns bad, the meal will be held indoors.
After the pot-luck, once again weather permitting, there will be a bonfire. Some chairs will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own. Anyone wishing to provide firewood is welcome to do so.
Those who wish can camp overnight. There is plenty of space for erecting tents.
Please feel free to invite other people to this event, if you believe that they will enjoy it.
Note: Depending on my work schedule, I am considering holding set-up on the Friday evening. If this becomes a possibility, I will then take a poll to see if there is anyone interested in arriving Friday, May 16th for an evening bonfire and possibly camping overnight for the event the next day.
