Join us and popular tutor Judi Evans for an Autumn series of weaving and willow workshops.
In this 4-hour workshop we will use basketry techniques to weave a small round patterned basket/ vessel. We will be weaving with soft textiles such as Sisal, colourful jute twine and tapestry yarns.
Only simple tools are required - a pair of scissors and a large eye needle (Chenille , darning, tapestry). All materials will be provided and tools will be available to share, but if you already have scissors and needles, please bring them along. Scissors and a sharp needle are the only tools required – these will be supplied to share on the day.
The materials used and techniques learned are totally repeatable at home, for you to produce a series of baskets, large and small for yourself or as gift for loved ones at Christmas. Perhaps they might be filled with homemade soap or chocolates!?
This is a very relaxing workshop in which you will have the opportunity to work very freely to create your own unique piece to take home, as well as the knowledge to continue to make these beautiful and unique baskets.
Please note that all weaving and willow work requires a certain degree of flexibility, especially in the hands.
Judi is a regular stallholder at our Tudor Square and Southern Maltings markets. She first discovered her love of basketry 16 years ago, but it wasn’t until 2017 that she had the opportunity to immerse herself more fully in the fascinating craft. In 2018 she spent a year learning with Cambridgeshire Basket maker Debbie Hall, who taught her many willow skills which she further developed in 2019 through a City and Guilds Certification in creative Basketry. She continues to hone and develop her skills, learning with basket makers across the UK and running beginners workshops locally for small groups, where she hopes to pass on her love and enthusiasm for this ancient craft.
Judi is a member of the Basket Makers’ Association, The Heritage Craft Association and Hertfordshire Basketry.
