[English below]Tutkimuskohteena Lähi-itä: missä, miten ja kenelle - Kuudes Lähi-idän ja Pohjois-Afrikan tutkimuksen kollokvio
Missä kulkevat Lähi-idän rajat – ja missä tutkimusalan rajat? Lähi-idän tutkijoita yhdistää kiinnostus Lähi-idän kieliin, kulttuureihin, uskontoihin, historiaan ja politiikkaan, ei jaettu metodi tai teoreettinen viitekehys.
Suomen Lähi-idän instituutin (FIME) ja Helsingin yliopiston järjestämässä monitieteisessä kollokviossa tarkastellaan Lähi-idän tutkimusperinteiden rajoja, yhtymäkohtia ja yhteentörmäyksiä.
Kollokviossa käydään lähes 20 paneelikeskustelua, jotka liittyvät moderniin ja historialliseen Lähi-itään. Teemat vaihtelevat kansainvälisestä politiikasta sosiologiaan, etnografiseen tutkimukseen ja arkeologiaan. Konferenssin esitykset ovat pääosin englanninkielisiä, mutta joitakin keskusteluja käydään myös suomeksi.
Rima Majed, Beirutin amerikkalaisen yliopiston sosiologian apuliasprofessori ja Suomen Lähi-idän instituutin residenssitutkija, pitää kollokvion keynote-puheen otsikolla "Sectarian Neoliberalism: The Social and Political Economy of Lebanon".

Studying the Middle East: where, how and for whom - Sixth Finnish Colloquium of Middle East and North African Studies
Where to draw the boundaries of the Middle East and Middle Eastern studies? Scholars focusing on this region are bound together by their interest in the languages, cultures, religions, history, and politics of the Middle East – not by a shared method or theoretical framework.
This colloquium is organised by the Finnish institute in the Middle East (FIME) and the University of Helsinki, and it focuses on the boundaries, intersections, and collisions between different research traditions in Middle Eastern and North African studies.
The programme of the colloquium includes almost 20 panels about the modern and historic Middle East. The themes vary from international politics to sociology, ethnographical research and archaeology. Although the presentations are mostly held in English, some discussions are in Finnish.
The keynote speech "Sectarian Neoliberalism: The Social and Political Economy of Lebanon" is given by Rima Majed, Assistant Professor in Sociology at the American University of Beirut and Resident Scholar of the Finnish Institute in the Middle East.
