BALTIMORE BOOK FESTIVAL 2024: Red Emma's stage
Spiritual practices have always been a part of liberation struggles, and today's Tarot practitioners have a role to play in shaping a more liberated future for us all.
Join Sara Calverese, creator of the Turning Terrestrial Tides Tarot; Lane Smith, author of 78 ACTS OF LIBERATION; and Phillip Clark of Solidarity Tarot in Baltimore for a panel discussion on divination in the context of growing global fascism.
Lane Smith has over 20 years of experience as a Tarot reader, organizer, and activist. They are the editor of the Tarot & Politics zine and a member of the Solidarity Tarot group in Baltimore. With two master’s degrees—one in social work, one in humanities and social thought—they have been involved in public health supporting harm reduction, the movement that helped end the death penalty in Maryland, and more. Smith lives in Baltimore, Maryland. For more information, go to http://mxlanesmith.com.
Sara Calvarese is an Aries Sun, Leo Moon, and Virgo Rising. She’s an astrologer, tarot reader, writer, tarot and oracle deck illustrator, and owner of The 8th House. She left her career in chemistry and engineering in 2020 to pursue full-time creative pursuits. She currently resides in South Philly and works for PM Press. Her works include: "The 8th House Tarot," "Prism Tarot," "Mundane Magick Tarot," Stories Oracle Deck, "Magick (IRL)," "Turning Terrestrial Tides Tarot," and the "Transit to The 8th House Coloring + Activity Book."
Phillip Clark (he/him) is a proud Baltimore native, writer, activist, paralegal, Christian Witch, tarot reader, and restorative justice practitioner. He has been a featured co-author in Hyrsteria: A Zine of Social Difference, where he addressed the dynamic of heteronormativity in highlighting victims of police brutality during Black Lives Matter protests, in Tempest Magazine, where he reflected on the possibilities and limits of electoral politics, and the National Catholic Reporter, where he critiqued Pope Francis welcoming LGBTQ people without changing Catholic doctrine on homosexuality. He enjoys cooking, remaining active in church, traveling, cultivating beloved community, and has recently started performing poetry. Phillip is a co-founder and co-leader of Solidarity Tarot, a non-hierarchical collective that merges spirituality and radical politics through tarot practice.
