July 9th Tuesday at the Tower – Building the Brick Giants 11:00amIn order to save America’s tallest lighthouse, on July 9, 1999, the brick giant 194 foot tall Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was moved and placed on a new foundation some 2900 feet back from the earlier one. The new foundation consisted of a 60-foot by 60-foot wide steel reinforced concrete slab, four feet deep, sitting on a three-foot brick layer and two feet of granite rock. The massive tower lost about broken 100 bricks, easily replaced, from its lower foundation, and suffered no other mishaps. On July 9, the Ponce inlet Lighthouse will present a program at 11:00 am called “Building the Brick Giants, which chronicles the need on our low lying and dangerous coasts to build tall lighthouses like Hatteras and Ponce Inlet.
